VEDA GYAN - 8

SIGNIFICANCE OF SESAME SEEDS

Sesame seeds are known in different names like Sesumun seeds, Til etc.  The black sesame seeds has a huge importance in Sanatana Dharma.

There is a very big misconception that the black sesame seeds is related with death or dead people only.  This is absolutely absurd.  The importance of black sesame seeds are immense as per the scriptures of Sanatana Dharma. A few of them are discussed below.

Black sesame seeds is the Dhanya – the grain – of Lord Saturn.  Burning black sesame seeds bundled in a black cotton cloth in the appropriate way in a lamp lit with cotton wick on sesame seed oil (til ka thel) set in a proper way, either in the house or in the temple, makes Lord Saturn happy and removes the bad effects of the Sani Dasa / Sade Saati (seven and half years of Saturn transit), Kandak Sasi, Ardashtma Sani etc.

A Havan done using black sesame seeds removes a lot of sins.  It is one of the ways of expiation for a lot of sins committed intentionally.  The Manthras in the Krishna Yajur Veda also describe the sins that are removed by doing such Havan.

If one has to enter into the last phase of life – Sanyasa, he has to perform Havan using black sesame seeds to clear himself of all the sins done, in order to qualify himself to become a Sanyasi.  A part of those Manthras are given in the Mahanarayana Upanishad of Taittiriyaranyaka of the Krishna Yajur Veda.

Havan done with black sesame seeds invoke the blessings of Gods and bestows the performer soon with a lot of wealth, prosperity, properties, happiness, children etc. Any blessings received with the performance of a Havan using black sesame seeds are said to last very long.

Tharpans are done for the departed soul using black sesame seeds.  This helps the oblations given to them reach them faster, and the doer will receive their blessings fast.

Brahmins when they change their holy thread, perform the Pitru Tharpans to the long gone fore fathers, even if their parents are alive.  This special Pitru Tharpan is done not for their father or grand father, but for the great great grand fathers who have achieved the salvations with the Lord, starting from Soma Pitruman.  For this also, black sesame seeds are used as the oblations would reach faster to them and so their blessings will reach the doer fast.

Tharpans and rituals related to the dead people are also done with black sesame seeds, as it would remove the sins of the doer and make him eligible for doing that oblation, and would help remove the sins of the dead person thus helping him to attain salvation.

Maha Sudarshan Havan done with black sesame seeds, will remove the black magic and other Neecha Deveta / Dur Deveta effects.  This is an effective way to remove the ill doings of the enemies, without doing the Satru Samhara.

The black sesame seeds has a very important role to play in our daily life.  One has to use it in his satvic food at least once, so it can remove any health related problems created by the enemies.

In all cases, eating meat or non vegetarian food, nullifies any remedies done.  It will also help one’s enemies to attack them using black magic.  Although there are many expiations explained using black sesame seeds, for eating food as a Dhan, for eating from an enemy, for eating from a person of undesirable character, for eating in the wrong time, for eating stale food, for eating food meant for someone else, for eating stolen food, for eating food from a person who is not really willing to give, for stealing, for telling lies, for robbing other’s property, for drinking unwanted drinks, for having illicit relationship other ladies including Guru’s wife, etc., but there is no specific expiation for eating non vegetarian foods.  Hence, the sins incurred by eating non vegetarian food, may not be removed by doing Havans using black sesame seeds.
